When Cindy was nine years old, a late-night house fire changed her life forever. She woke up surrounded by thick smoke while firefighters rushed to rescue her and her mother from the burning home. Although they survived, the accident left visible scars on Cindy’s face, neck, and arm that followed her through every stage of growing up. Over time, she learned to live with her reflection, but dealing with the quiet stares and whispers from other people was much harder. By her senior year of high school, Cindy had become skilled at pretending those reactions no longer hurt. So when prom season arrived, she planned to avoid it completely. Her mother, however, gently reminded her that one painful event should not continue deciding her future. Reluctantly, Cindy agreed to attend, hoping she could survive one evening without feeling invisible.
