After Grant retired, he began volunteering at an animal shelter, and one day my curiosity got the better of me, so I followed him. That’s when I saw him unlock the door of a house I had never seen before. When Grant’s working life ended, I worried the silence at home might weigh heavily on him. For 41 years, his life had been structured—early mornings, long days, and home by dinner. He was never someone who stayed still for long. We raised our two children in a busy, energetic home that matched his personality. Two big dogs and a spoiled cat completed our household, and Grant often spoke to them as if they fully understood him. So it made sense when he started volunteering at the animal shelter. “You’ve always had a soft spot for strays,” I told him. He just smiled. “Someone’s got to look after them.” Every day he came home with stories—a blind beagle, a nervous shepherd, animals he was trying to help. I felt proud of him. Until the day I couldn’t reach him. The washing machine had started leaking, and I needed the shutoff valve key—something only Grant knew where to find. After several unanswered calls, I contacted the shelter. “Hi,” I said. “This is Grant’s wife. Is he still there?” There was a pause. Then the woman replied, “Ma’am… your husband hasn’t been here for six months.” I froze. Six months. That evening, when Grant came home, I said nothing. The next morning, after he kissed me goodbye and left for “the shelter,” I followed him. He didn’t stop there. He drove straight past it, continued beyond the edge of town, and eventually pulled up at a small white house I didn’t recognize. I parked behind a cluster of trees, gripping the steering wheel tightly. Grant got out, looked around carefully, pulled out a key, and unlocked the front door before stepping inside. I couldn’t bring myself to leave. I crossed the road, walked up to the porch, and let myself in without knocking. “Grant?” I called out, louder than I intended. And what I saw inside was nothing like what I expected. ⬇️
