Last American polio survivor in an iron lung dies at 78

He moved to Oklahoma last year to be with Lillard. They married in February.

Lillard lived independently until recently, often using a portable ventilator outside of the iron lung.

“She didn’t really require a caretaker until COVID-19,” said McVey. “She fixed her own meals and took care of everything herself.”
