Last American polio survivor in an iron lung dies at 78

in America, especially among families with kids.

Tens of thousands of people died. Survivors were often paralyzed, disfigured or confined to an iron lung.

As the disease was eradicated by childhood immunizations, so was the need for the iron lung.
