But Ethan never did it during naps. Never when David was staring right at him. Only when he was awake. Only when David looked away for a second. And I think I’m already too late.” Dr. Mitchell came the next afternoon. She played with Ethan, spoke gently, watched him crawl, watched him stack blocks, watched him laugh once and then suddenly go silent. Minutes later, he walked to that same corner and pressed his face against the wall again. Her expression changed immediately. “David,” she asked in a low voice, “has anyone else had regular access to this house since your wife passed?” “No,” he said. Then he hesitated. “Only babysitters.
